This short, course-based workshop provides hands-on training on applying LCA to industrial water and wastewater systems using openLCA software. Participants will learn the core principles of LCA, how to define goal and scope, select appropriate impact categories, and interpret results to support technology comparison and informed decision-making in real-world industrial contexts.

Room: Collegezaal DWorkshop descriptionWater stress is intensifying globally due to rapid urbanization, rising demand, groundwater over-extraction, pollution, and climate change, making long-term water security a strategic priority. Water stewardship is embedded within the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 6, 11, 12, and 13, alongside initiatives such as the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate promoting Net Positive Water Impact. Across sectors, hospitality, data centers, agriculture, commercial, and residential, water use is often poorly monitored. A standardized Water Positivity framework enables measurement, verification, improve efficiency, water reuse and recharge, alignment with applicable code and regulations, and evidence-based planning for resilient, sustainable water management.

The plant is powered by offshore wind turbines and produces hydrogen for the Pernis Energy and Chemicals Park. Although the focus is often on hydrogen production, it could not operate without water. The site visit will start in the visitor centre with a presentation on the development of the water system and its integration from intake to outfall. 13:45 — Back at TU Delft AulaBackgroundThe Tata Steel site in IJmuiden is the size of a small city and stretches over three municipal areas. A lot is happening on-site: raw materials arrive by ship and after various processing stages are distributed as rolls of steel by rail, barge, sea or lorries. Water is used on-site for cooling, dust suppression, descaling, and more. The ambition is to produce hydrogen-based green steel by 2030, preparations for which are currently ongoing.
During the site visit, we will get a guided tour by bus over the site, and a walkthrough of the hot strip rolling mill. The excursion will end with a presentation & Q&A led by Tata Steel IJmuiden’s in-house water experts. -

Important: We ask you to arrive here by own transport.BackgroundLenntech focuses on the development and realization of industrial water treatment systems, for concentrating or separating ions and the production of acid and base.
The key objectives for the water treatment systems are, for example, water recovery, volume minimization, brine purification and brine valorisation.
With a large amount of lab- and pilot-scale setups, information can be acquired for the validation and design of concepts. Technologies comprise, amongst others, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis and ion exchange.
Engineering and assembly can also be done by Lenntech. All under one roof. The tour will show the laboratories, pilot systems and assembly workshop.
